Actual winter

Third snow day. Experts believe it could all be gone by tomorrow and the blog will be back to full operation.

It won’t have escaped your attention that it nearly always snows in February; less often at Christmas. This is in spite of the fact that Christmas was traditionally the moment where we rallied round against the ‘bleak midwinter’; it was the festival of solace against the chill. Yet more proof that people in the old days weren’t so smart (cf caning in schools, believing in flat earth, no prawn cocktail crisps etc). Now we’re smart enough to realise winter is long. Is it time to move Christmas to Feb or at least mid-January? I think you’ll agree it is.

Maybe we should just have 2 Christmases, but we won’t bother saying the second one has anything to do with Christians.

But Christmas is when most people travel to see their families, so it’s a good thing that it rarely snows.

Richard Osman had the same idea though so evidently you are not the only person who likes a White Christmas.

We didn’t get much snow in the North west incidentally. It just delayed my journey home on Saturday by about 20 minutes. Not really report-worthy I’ll admit. :-)

Can we delay Valentine’s day until I have a girlfriend too?

To me Christmas has already moved. When I emigrated from Bristol to Brisbane it moved from the middle of winter to the middle of summer. Please don’t move it, I’ll get confused again.

By the way, there are no prawn cocktail crisps here either. Well, you can buy them but in special British shops, along with Yorkie bars, Polo mints, Bisto Gravy, etc.

If you’re homesick while in Brisbane, you can get your crisps here: http://www.britainonthebayside.com.au/home.php

Mmm prawn cocktail crisps. I think we should just make the school february holidays for everyone.

Let’s not move Christmas. I think instead we should have another bank holiday around this kind of time, given that most people are usually off work because of the snow anyway!

Can’t we just do away with Christmas Day altogether and have Snow Day instead?!

Oh Watson, you fool. Prawn cocktail crisps are just awful.
