Used up most of my ‘fringe’ titles last year
‘The point stands – let’s have more shows that allow funny people to be funny without having to be loud and contrived.’
This was from a Comment last night. I’m letting it stand as a simple, effective epigraph for the Fringe which is now about to grind into gear once more. Edinburgh is full as ever of university drama societies, people who can juggle, attractive comics waiting to become presenters, and increasingly wealthy landlords. Despite all this there’s the familiar note of anticipation and a part of me almost wishes I was doing a new proper show, starting Wednesday like everyone else, and ploughing through the festival like last year and most years. But a bigger part of me immediately arises and clubs that part to death. No thanks. Not for me, this time. I’ll be parenting and writing. If you’re there though, I hope you will make it to my little work-in-progress shows, or you might catch me at something like the Horne Section, or you’ll see me in that Sainsbury’s on the Meadows buying something for Kit that we’ve forgotten about, like milk or a bed.
Since I’m not really involved in the festival this year, my blogs shouldn’t be as tied to it as they were last year – hell, I’m even coming home to London for a book event on the 8th, but a non-embarrassing one this time I think – so if you aren’t there, you won’t need to feel left out. We’ll all be just fine.

A less manic august must be quite a luxury!

Hey Mark
Long time no comment. A quick and efficient one coming up.
1. Had I not lived in Glasgow I would most certainly have been at your book event. I think the book is great.
2. Hopefully bump into you in the courtyard or somewhere during the next few weeks.
3. Am coming to see you in Ed (forget which date – I think the last one) and looking forward to it immensely.
Over and out.

Have very little of originality to say about the fringe – CAN’T WAIT!!! seems to have become a constant mantra over the past 4 years from about May to August.
V much hoping to bump into you while I’m up there – will be staying in a flat v near the Meadows, so will keep an eye out for Watsons.
Look forward to seeing you next week!

If you see me in Edinburgh, I promise I’m not a stalker like my friend told you I was in Chorley :’)

Oh, I didn’t realise you’d be in Edinburgh outside of your work-in-progress shows. I may able to score some Where’s Watson points. Are we still doing that? I’ve forgotten the rules… and my score.

Is it possible to have more details of the London book event on the 8th, as I’m 1 person who is not going to The Fringe & will be suffering from live comedy withdrawal symptoms for the whole month of August.

Edinburgh seems like it would be a really lovely place to go to write. Maybe not during the Fringe, since it’s so frantic, but I’m sure you’ll be able to find some place that’s not too stressful!
And glad to hear the book thing on the 8th is still happening, since I’ve been looking forward to it since you first announced it! I shall definitely be in attendance, and I think my mother will probably come along as well.
Oh, and do you know what day you’re doing Horne Section?

I hope to see you at most if not all of those places. I will have the interwebs as well as other means of communication as well, so I will certainly be stalking you a bit (as per usual), if not the other way around.

I will make it to Edinburgh eventually. I have friends doing the university-drama thing and I wish I could go and watch but, alas, this year it was not to be. Hope everyone survives, it sounds mental.

somewhat appropriately I send this commrnt from a coach full of dramsoc luvvies bound for the fringe.
like a bad relationship i’m wondering why the everloving fuck i’m doing this to myself, whilst unbearably excited for it all.
I shall wave to you as I cross through the meadows each morning.

I can’t wait – I think that’s been the theme of my last few comments – I’m heading up to Ed on the 14th (I’ll be at your first show!) – the place I stay is lovely but doesn’t do breakfast so it is highly likely I’ll see you in Sainsburys as I stock up on food supplies…av fun!!!Jx
