Our song for Europe

The answer to yesterday’s not very thrilling trivia question was, yes, I missed the final last year because I was in Senegal. Remember when I was in Senegal? It’s a bloody year ago. Time flies, doesn’t it, and by ‘flies’ I mean ‘goes by in a reasonably predictable manner’.

Who’s going to come to my deliberately-not-very-well-publicised Edinburgh shows? August 17th to 25th. I’m seeking a few audience members in advance to help with certain aspects of the show. If you think you’re likely to be there, let me know below. Naturally you won’t be committed to anything by doing this, but it would be useful for me to have an idea.

I flew back from New Zealand to Australia today and am now in the final final bit of my lengthy stay in this part of the world. I will be back in the UK on Saturday. I hear the weather there is delightful. See if you can keep it nice for a bit longer. I’m on my way. Before then, I am going to go to sleep. Azerbaijan won the Eurovision, by all accounts. There are a lot more European countries than when I did my project on Europe in Year 6. I shall be flying not too far from Azerbaijan on my way home, so I’ll give them a salute on my way over.

Another fairly disappointing year for the UK. It’s time we won this thing, no? Shall we as a blog community start writing a song now and aim to have it ready for whenever they choose the 2012 entry? Who wants to help with this? Let’s get some lyrics and musicians together. Non-Brits can also help. The German winner last year was written by Britons, for example. OK, I’m into this idea now. Let’s get cracking. Theme? Rhymes? Possible visual style?

    Edinburgh? Definitely!

Mark, I’ll be in Edinburgh for the whole of the festival, and would be delighted to help in any capacity…

Edinburgh – a resounding YES from me. Abso-frickin-lutely.

  4. Posted by James on May 17, 2011

I’m in Edinburgh during that time. I’m there now, in fact. Always there. I live in Edinburgh is basically what I’m getting at here. And am willing to help.

    Eurovision hopeful, reporting for duty.

    Qualifications:
    A deep love of Eurovision
    A ukulele
That song I wrote you for Christmas
    A song I wrote Aislinn

We could (and should) do this

All my edinburgh plans are very much in the category of ‘things that will maybe maybe might happen’ nonetheless…

I hope to be there around 17th, so count me in too please.

Hello. I am hoping to be in Edinburgh towards the end of Aug so please feel free to count me (+1) into whatever random schemes you are concocting. Thank you. Bye.

Eurovision-wise, I am a dead loss (unless you need someone to come up with truly predictable rhymes like “girl” and “world”), but I will certainly be at your Edinburgh show. Wouldn’t quite be Edinburgh without you.

Eurovision? That would be awesome! I think if we just got as many watsonians together as possible playing a large and random assortment of instruments it could be really cool.
I can play the piano and the fiddle (better at the fiddle though) and i would totally be up for it! :)

It was great to have you in Australia! Have a safe trip home!
re: eurovision – I kind of play guitar? As long as there are no barre chords… not shit hot with them.

  11. Posted by MusicalLottie on May 16, 2011

Hmm, I can play some instruments but I lose my nerve … I could help with writing the melody though?

Ugh I can’t believe Moldova got to the final and Belgium didn’t. I didn’t see the semi-finals (or indeed much of the final – only the snippets I caught as my parents were watching it) but I know the Belgian entry had Roxorloops, who is just amazing. And quite a nice guy, too.

I’ll be there for 17th-21st. Would love to help – but in a shy, probably mute way if possible. :] Unless I’m drunk.

  13. Posted by Rachael on May 16, 2011

I cant play anything but I could try and learn something for next year if I get cracking now.

I shall be at the Fringe from the 21st onwards and I’m more than willing to be involved in anything you have planned!

I have no talent when it comes to music, but I could do choreography.

Hi Mark, thanks for tweet re. pilot show :o )

have looked at Fringe website, can’t really get my head round what’s happening when and I have a load of wedding flowers to do that month, so not sure, maybe have to decide nearer the time …

Looking forward to your homecoming … may throw an impromptu party …

I was trying to work out when to come to Edinburgh. That solves it. I’ll be there. I’d (of course) like to be involved!!

  17. Posted by Sue (DiB) on May 16, 2011

I’m leaving Edinburgh on the 19th so we overlap my last couple of days. See you there!

  18. Posted by Tibbs on May 16, 2011

I am definitely going to be there for that stretch, and am more than happy to help out!

As for song stylings, I could try to remember where I left my violin, or maybe help with costume design / face painting?

  19. Posted by Gabi on May 15, 2011

Although I have no musical talents to offer, I shall most definitely be at you’re Edinburgh shows. In fact I have scheduled my flight home around it. Very excited

  20. Posted by Joe on May 15, 2011

Has further information been posted on the internet about Mark’s Edinburgh show? I’m struggling to find any more details aside from this blog. I’ll be at the festival from the 17th-25th, and don’t want to miss out on a ticket. Thanks!

    *tentatively puts hand up*

I plan to be in Edinburgh from 17th to 25th…

*wonders what she’s just let herself in for…*

  22. Posted by Megan on May 15, 2011

Dang, hm, how can I make it to Edinburgh. My film should be done, er, filming by then…but will finances allow?

  23. Posted by Corey on May 15, 2011

The songs that have people dicking about in silly costumes always seem to do well. Something along the lines of Daft Punk, or a low budget Daft Punk with cardboard box costumes…… with a huge ensemble of a band like Lambchop playing instruments that aren’t instruments like pots and pans etc

  24. Posted by Phill on May 15, 2011

In terms of the Eurovision song, I’d definitely be up for that!

I can play guitar and piano. But not very well. (Learning guitar is my TYSIC… I’ve been doing piano for a fair bit longer). So I’m happy to help. I’m sure the collective Watsonian talent could do better than Blue ;)

  25. Posted by Rachel L on May 15, 2011

I should be in Edinburgh for at least some of the time but sorting out how/when is at the end of a very long to do list. Definitely happy to help out in anyway that I can.

  26. Posted by Emily on May 15, 2011

Trying to convince people to go with me to Edinburgh, but since none of my friends have any money, I’ll probably bring my mum. If I get there, and I’ll sulk for a full year if I don’t, I will be at one of the shows.

I have a purple ukulele which I aim to be able to play (probably still badly) by the summer. Far more important than A levels.

  27. Posted by Alex on May 15, 2011

    Moldova *were* amazing…

I will very probably be there, but I’m having some trouble organising things in my head. I will confirm once my exams are out of the way.

  28. Posted by alot of rachels on May 15, 2011

I wont be at Edinburgh :(

but eurovision I can play uke…that’s all

  29. Posted by h2osarah on May 15, 2011

Ooh! I’ll be there for both the 17th and 25th and am willing to do pretty much anything. I’m intrigued by the need for help, and it’s always wise to volunteer for something without any details… right?

  30. Posted by ChrisP on May 15, 2011

    I’ll do guitar!

Oh and I think I may be able to make it to the Bristol DVD filming thingy. Happy Days.

  31. Posted by Aislinn on May 15, 2011

    What Zoe said.

We’re there for the entirety of that time and will probably be willing to do more or less whatever.

  32. Posted by Zoe Fell on May 15, 2011

Aislinn and I are going to be around. And we like doing fairly odd things. So I guess you can count us in.

As for Eurovision…over the top national costumes are always good. And dry ice. Lots of dry ice.

  33. Posted by Misha on May 15, 2011

Dearest Mr Watson I should like to state that i’ll be there.
I can’t say for sure which day mind, i’ve got a job with a theatre company to go up, and I don’t know when i’ll be on shift you see.

(Not sure why i’ve come over all formal, too many job applications?)

If there is to be a Watsonian Eurovision bid I think it ought to be one of the fun, silly ones. Like Moldova. Moldova were amazing.

  34. Posted by Jen on May 15, 2011

i’ll be there on the 17th..happy and willing to help…added an extra date onto my hotel booking especially….tickets aren’t for sale anywhere yet though… are they?…ooooo im definately up for the song idea…although my musical talents are limited…if you need a recorder player though im your girl!!We could base it around one or a couple of your jokes….hmmmm maybe thats abit random…i’ll have a think!Safe journey!Jx

  35. Posted by Katie on May 15, 2011

I’ll definitely be there, so I’d be happy to help out if I can.

  36. Posted by lora on May 15, 2011

I arrive on the 21st therefore I will be in attendance at one show for definite :)

  37. Posted by Rachel/Pandora on May 15, 2011

I leave on the morning of the 17th, which I’m trying very hard not to hold against you too much. I’m sure it’ll be dead good though…
