Congratulations, your life is still going

Kit Watson was born a year ago today. I had just started the blog then, and wrote one called Congratulations Your Life Is Over, in honour of
the rather double-edged sentiments that a lot of people expressed on the prospect of me becoming a dad. Now that we’ve survived a year as parents, I feel I can say with authority that having a baby is hard, hard, hard- even harder than it looks in Three Men And A Baby- but it doesn’t actually finish off the other aspects of your life, even if occasionally it feels that way.

I’m fortunate of course only to be second-in-command to an inspirational mother, and even with the two of us, it has been a
fair old challenge. So if you ever know anyone raising a kid on their own, cut them as much slack as you can and maybe drop round with some pasta from time to time.

If I stick this out till 2020 as planned and you do too, then
and update you every Kit Birthday, then by the end I will be able to give you the lowdown on having a ten-year-old. Which is a thought to make any of us feel aged, I think. But especially me. So I’ll leave it there. That’s it for now! Be kind to a baby this week! They’re very noisy and emotional but they mean well.

Aw, I hope Kit had a good birthday. You sound like amazing parents.

I know about the one parent thing. I’ve only ever had my mum, and I am pretty confident I could never do half of what she has done by herself.

Happy belated birthday little one, I’m talking about Kit not you of course Mark, as you are a big grown up person (I’m guessing) And well done Mark and Emily on surviving your first year of parenthood, the first ten are the worst, then the teenage years are even worse than that! Mine are now 23 and 21 and things are getting easier as they are away from home alot :o )

Many congratulations to Anna! I shall send some cyber-sleep your way. :-)

And a belated Happy Birthday to little Kit. It’s weird to think that we’ll all know about his first day at school. Assuming he hasn’t said, “Dad stop telling all these strangers about me” by then. I hope not. :-)

Happy Birthday to Kit! He sounds like a really cool little kid. I don’t remember my first birthday of course but my brother’s seemed like a lot of effort when all he wanted was a balloon and some icing.
And congratulations Anna! I only know one Kitty (also short for Kathleen!) personally and she is the smartest and funniest person I know and my very best friend so that name has a lot of excellent “positive energy” to it I think!

Hi Mark. Happy Birthday Kit and Congratulations to Anna! I’m probably one of the oldest people commenting here – my daughter will be 18 in a couple of months. I have to say, however, that she’s a great girl who has never given us – so far anyway, one ounce of worry and I count myself very lucky to have a sensible daughter. Also it hardly seems any time at all since she was Kit’s age! I know some people dread the teenage years but I love them.Have a lovely day, all of you. Tracey x

Happy Birthday Kit and congratulations on the ongoing life Mark and Emily.

“They’re very noisy and emotional but they mean well.” < that is lovely and really made me smile.

    Congratulations Anna!

Happy 1st birthday to Watson junior! And congrats to both M & E for successful completion of parenthood module 1 – only another 17 or so to go….(20 and counting, in my case)

Also congrats to Anna on bravely commencing the ‘toddler-plus-newborn’ advanced course! Welcome, Kitty! It’s fun in these parts!

Well done to you all for reaching the one year milestone. Don’t worry, it get’s better, then worse, then better, then worse again… but always on an upward drift, a bit like shares or property prices… that’s if you’re doing it right. And it usually works out fine even if you don’t have a clue. :)

Congratulations Anna, Kitty is a great name too. Happy Birthday Kit, if you ever read this someday, and do be nice to your parents.

Happy birthday Kit and well done Mark and Emily; you’ve made it this far, sanity (largely) intact. Although I can’t speak from experience, I believe it gets easier and more fun from here on in – I rather hope you and Kit might learn to ride bikes together.

While I know this isn’t a Can I Help You? blog, I’m going to ask some advice anyway, because it fits in rather neatly with the theme. My best friends are having a baby in July (on the 4th, theoretically) and I’d like to be the most helpful, least annoying, non-child-having friend I can be. I’m not sure whether the best thing is getting involved and trying to help, or staying out of their way and letting them get on with it. Did you desperately want friends to come round and appreciate Kit or wish they’d talk about something else? Any thoughts you have on the topic would be very welcome.

@Anna – congratulations! I very much like the name Kitty.

Happy 1st Birthday Kit! I hope you and Mrs WH enjoyed the day (it’s kind of more for you than anyone else, shhh don’t tell anyone you noticed.)

And many congratualtions Anna, I do concur that toddlers can be more fun!

    Happy birthday, Kit!
Can we set up a potential marriage in 20-odd years between Kit and new-born Kitty please?! Or at least see if they’ll be friends…

A message for Kit, despite the fact he can’t read:

Happy birthday, Watson Jnr. I hope you have (had) a lovely day full of the sorts of things that 1 year olds enjoy.

Also, well done for being both a blogger and a father on a daily basis for the past year.
(That bit’s to you, not to Kit.)

I can’t believe I forgot that today is Kit’s birthday! Seems like it should’ve stuck in my mind since it’s also my Dad’s birthday. Happy birthday little K-man!

Happy birthday Kit! If it helps, the second year is so much easier than the first- toddlers are insane, but so much more fun than babies.

(Oh, and, by the way, I had my 2nd baby on Monday night- a little girl, 7lbs 3oz,called Kathleen (but will be known as Kitty)
