Kindness Day debrief: cheesecake, chicken and religious tolerance

Here’s a round-up of what (some) Watsonians got up to for Kindness Day. There are more, so sorry if I missed you out. Highly impressive and varied altruism. As always, this is a rather lovely glimpse of what everyone can do by working together and being idealistic. Thank you everyone. There’s one more thing: Sam Schafer, as an ongoing piece of kindness, is giving out free lollipops to Watsonians. Tweet him on @samschafer. He’ll give you a lolly. He also defended a mosque, but I’m going to do a separate blog on that.

Kind acts:

TIBBS I brought some kindness to some nurses, in the form of chocolate and flowers, and to my coworkers in the form of timbits (ie doughnut holes). And as part of being less introverted, I even wrote a blog about it: http://tiny.cc/kday.

KATY As I was visiting my best mate this weekend I took him out for a night out on the Saturday and paid for everything, drinks before we left, drinks all night, transport and chicken. I also made him a cheesecake.

SEPHY I complimented one of the checkout staff at Tesco to customer service; I hope the message got passed on. I bought another poppy. And finally, I picked my brother up from town so that he didnt have to pay for a taxi, whereas tbh i would usually have told him to jog right on.

SIMON I left a note for my colleague who has gone in for an operation and I think is under appreciated by most people in the organisation. I also found a woman who was lost in Euston station and waited with her till the bus came.

RACHAEL I spent most the day making drinks for all my nan’s friends at her birthday party and I gave my mum some sweets.

AMYCOOL Just bought a tin of Celebrations to take to the hospital with me. £4.50!!!

RACHEL I got my mum some nice cheese.

HELEN Left a ‘Thank You’ note with some chocolate (big pack of magic stars) out for the post lady today. She wrote this message on an envelope: http://yfrog.com/7epicture0065bj

NUALA Took my kids out for the day, allowing my husband a day of chilling out at home, watching as much sport as he wanted. Does that count?

PANDORA Today I’ve bought my Mum some flowers, cos she’s dead nice. I also bought cookie making ingredients for teachers on Monday.
I also ended up doing something I wasn’t planning on, by dealing with a girl who dislocated her shoulder in a netball match. I would have done it anyway, being as I’m trained for it, but she said I stopped her panicking and things, so that’s quite kind, I think.

ISSEY I’m helping my dad move house today!

EMILY I have put money in to two washing machines and two dryers in halls so that some people get a nice surprise. I didn’t take pictures though because there was a girl watching me.

MEG I’m also going to spend next week being kind to my teachers because teaching teenagers must be horrific. I did this for a very, very special teacher in September (and wrote a blog about it: http://bit.ly/9FXU8s ) but I plan to make all my teachers’ days better throughout next week. Because they deserve it.

ANNA My first kind act was to buy two packs of Christmas cards from my friend, whose son was diagnosed with cancer… I’m also going to send him some money to buy a toy on my behalf (as he’s in Northampton and I’m in Essex, so can’t do it in person). If here are any Northampton Watsonians, please, as your act of kindness, go to Asda in Kingsthorpe, buy a toy, and make a sick child happy on Christmas Day. (more details here http://www.tinyurl.com/3xazhsy )

…I’m off to record my show. You all gladdened my heart. Signed, Mr Watson

Lovely to read about all the acts of kindness. It’s inspiring to hear about all the little ways you can make the world a bit better!

Just to be clear, the £4.50!!! was a positive one, not a complaint. :-)

It’s Children in Need on Friday, so more opportunity for kindness. I must admit I don’t usually donate (perhaps it’s the time of year) but after seeing Victoria Coren wearing bear ears on the Only Connect Children in Need Special, I feel I really must.

Lovely work Watsonians, kindness lives. In the spirit of it all I keep thinking about what things I could do in certain situations, most are over-ambitous and impractical such as the strong urge to buy a round of drinks for an entire pub, although I did tell the barman to keep the change (it was only 10p so he didn’t seem impressed but I felt cool).

In terms of Lollipop news you need to tweet @schafersam.

Lovely. I did very little (just letting people onto public transport/through doors etc ahead of me), but I think this has shamed/motivated me into some more active kindness.

Aw That made me smile. Well done everyone. I especially liked Simon’s “found a woman who was lost in Euston Station and waited with her until the bus came”. Sounds like you were seaching for one XD

Lovely acts of kindness by everyone this weekend. I know the times past but I’ve supported my mum as my uncle passed away. It’s what I would do anyway so probably not worth mentioning but she said it has helped her.
I also lent my phone to my friend so she could call the police as her phone was out of credit.

Congrats everyone, made me smile :)

My heart is also gladdened. I am motivated to be kinder to the people around me. I bought oreos for all the people who share our kitchen today, so that we have nice biscuits for once.

This blog is a powerful force for good in the world.
