'Kicks Off' kicks off

There are more and more new commenters at the moment, thanks probably to the fact that I’m touring the country to sign up new readers to the blog (officially, it’s a stand-up tour, but we all know what it’s really about). I just wanted to welcome everyone who’s new to the blog, and to direct your attention to the fact that it is going on for ten years. So you’re really only new in the same sense that, for example, the dinosaurs were new to planet earth at one time. When 2016 rolls around, you’ll be talking about the good old days of the blog before it sold out and was sponsored by Coke and I was paid £200,000 a year to do it.

My overall aim over this decade is to become an optimist – there are some auxiliary challenges which support this one big aim – and indeed the whole idea of the blog is an optimistic one. The idea that I can do this every day, and that people will keep reading, requires constant leaps of faith. So, that’s what I’m doing. You can set your own challenge for the remainder of the ten years by going to www.markwatsonfans.com/tysic (I think that’s the address). Lots of people have.

Tomorrow I film the first of my sports shows for ITV4, so it really is all about that at the moment. By ‘it’ I mean ‘my mental state’. I have done a fair bit of this sort of thing before, but it’s odd to have a show called Mark Watson Kicks Off and be called Mark Watson and have a title sequence where it’s me doing sporty things and so on. It’s a slightly less grand claim than making the world substantially better, but what with it being TV, there is more pressure on things like my hairstyle and whether I remember to bring my glasses. That’s right. I’m a pro.

So, I’m off to get into the zone. The zone in this case being a place where you sleep for a bit, get up, give a bottle to your baby, do some chores and then go to a studio. I’ll probably not blog until the recording is done and, if possible, dusted. If dusting threatens to go on beyond midnight, I’ll blog when it is merely done. See you on the other side of my small but exciting task.

When the sponsorship deals come rolling in I think you should seriously consider picking pepsi over coke. It’s just better.

Go on Mark – get your new sports related show presentation on my lad! Just remember though: if anyone attacks cricket for whatever reason don’t rise to it. Just take a deep breath and continue with the show, ignoring the comment made. If they contiune to press the cricket button then call them a dark orifice after the show or something.

Good luck with the show – I’m keeping my fingers crossed that ITV4 behaves itself so I can watch it on Thursday. It’s the one channel that has the dodgiest reception where I live and presenters can end up doing impressions of Norman Collier (for those old enough to remember him). Not good – but in the spirit of optimism – I know it will be fine :)
