Where's Watson?

I’m writing this on my phone. It feels like texting. I hope this works. Normally I write the blog on a tiny tiny laptop, which has been one of the heroes of the past few months. I would put it third, in fact, behind the wife and me, if you were picking a star of Kit’s life so far. It has come with me everywhere and enabled me to blog in cars, on trains, in the bath, and in far more alarming places. Now I have lost the charger and I am trying this WordPress app on my iPhone. Six months ago I didn’t know what an app was or what WordPress was. I still don’t entirely trust them to get this online before that magical deadline of midnight. But we’ll see.

I’ve now more or less completed the remarkable round of minor TV appearances I was on about last week and am sitting, tired, backstage in Bristol about to run my festival show once more through its paces. Not much blogging time, so a quick update on
Where’s Watson?

This is the game where, basically, you get points for saying hello to me (Watson) in the street, or at a show, or just seeing me but not saying hello.

The first points were chalked up last week. Chris Pollington cheekily asked for 0.1 of a point for seeing a poster of me. Kindly, I awarded it. Then, a nice lady called Katie came to my show in Putney, said hello, and we took a photo together. Now you’re talking. 2 points. So that leaderboard:

Katie………………2
Pollington……….0.1
Everyone else in the world………..0

Exciting! But is there still time for someone else to come through? Since the game doesn’t end till Feb 18 2020, I would say yes, there may well be.

Right, there are other things to say but I’m scared this won’t work properly. I’ll do better tomorrow but for now I want to bank what we already have. Like on Deal Or No Deal. Please let it work. Here we go…..

How can you type on a tiny thing without making loads of mistakes? Impressive skills.

Oooh thats me that is up there at the top of the leaderboard! its pretty exciting, but I know I wont be up there long! It was my birthday as well when I collected those points so it was kind of a special day. Mark was so utterly delightful.

The picture we took is here (hopefully this works) http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4796450&id=564951764

Ugh living in Devon really does have drawbacks sometimes! However, Feb 2011, I plan on moving to Torquay for the day on your gig. I figure you’ll need a wonder round and if I wonder enough too I’m bound to see you. Actually talking to you could be a whole different story!
I’m glad this comp has such a long deadline!!

Hm. I assume points can’t be awarded retrospectively. I’ve met you a few times after shows and during Edinburgh, particularly 2008, saw you wandering through the courtyard most days…

I’m amazed you got all the way through that. I find using the touch keypad on my iphone one of the most hellish experiences imaginable. My texts often come out: “yeah that souibs coke ill meet you win OH DUCK IT JUST CELL ME”
    You continue to impress!

It’s quite hard to claim points when living in Australia, but if you make your way down here for the Melbourne Fringe Festival, I’ll probably run into you a few times there (I’m a veteran Fringe volunteer – mainly bar work, occasionally front of house) which will hopefully make up for this slight handicap.

helen (iamaicelady) – He also reminds me of Hugh Laurie, with no gray hair. And, Mark is much better looking than this chap.

Hmm, I’m going to be pointlessly picky again here but – it sounds less like Deal Or No Deal and more like The Weakest Link to me… Yes, very sad aren’t I? ;o)

I did see a poster of you in Halifax this weekend, but shall refrain from claiming any points for it. Blogging in the bath is brave – I’d be terrified of breaking the laptop and/or electrocuting myself!

I saw a man in a car on the M1 who looked a bit like you the other day. That’s the closest I’ve come so far. However, I’m hopefully coming to your London book reading sesh and will be seeing you at the Bristol Hippodrome in October, so points WILL be mine. Do you still live in Bristol? I’m in Bristol half the time and near London the other half, so odds are I’ve got to bump into you one day, surely. I just hope you realise that this challenge is essentially a stalking invitation. I’m very competitive!

For the record, if I walk past the same poster again (or a similar one) I wouldn’t claim another 0.1 points. That would be pushing it. It’s for the Cambridge gig on Friday so won’t be there much longer anyway. It just means I can’t tie with anybody and thus eliminates the possibility of extra time and penalties.

In exchange for my 0.1 points, I will mention it to everybody I can between now and then. Free publicity, innit.

Alice – minimising wine consumption. Above and beyond the call of a new laptop!

I agree with Pandora – you should come play at the first Watsonian Picnic on Saturday :) Hopefully it’ll still be sunny!

I hope your Bristol show went well.

I would like to make a claim for some Where’s Watson points.

‘hornseygirl’ suggests that we may live in the same neck of the woods. I have seen you in our local bakers (the one founded in 1820); in our local supermarket (the ex Woolies site) and at the Friday morning baby weigh-in clinic. I should’ve, but didn’t, say hello. I shall try not to be so shy next time!

Every post I’ve done on here has been on my phone. Technology is mad isn’t it?!

That said… Skydive for charity with me? ;)

Personally I prefer BlogBooster, little easier for me to read and use. It’s been almost a year since I broke the screen on my laptop and rendered it a giant paperweight. Subsequently I’ve used the iPhone as a substitute, though now I’ve started blogging and writing I do miss a proper keyboard and have resigned myself to saving up, maximising hours, minimising wine consumption, in order to run with the pack again. Very disappointed with myself that the one day I don’t head into town you do a trial run of your show! Still, there’s Edinburgh.

Best I can offer is someone who looked a bit like you in town. That and the advert for the tour I tore out of the sunday paper and bluetacked to my wall.

It has pride of place next to my GIANT leaf. (it’s massive)

Oh well hinted Rachel. I knew you were my sister for a reason…

There’s a singer who’s very big in France that looks an awful lot like you Mark, and I kept thinking it was you on the telly when I lived there. Perhaps another category for ‘people who see someone that really looks like mark and although it isn’t really Mark that fact that you thought it was is a reflection of how much the person looks like Mark rather than the spotter’s terrible eyesight.’ This category would probably earn about a quarter of a point.

    Here’s the chap in question:

Oh goodness, maybe it was! I would also like to point out that I read half of the blog before realising it said ’0 comments’ at the top, so I feel less … almost-guilty than I would otherwise. In that case, my question is: what happened to your accent? (I’ve asked it previously but didn’t feel that it really deserved your attention because, well, you have lots of questions that people ask. Now I kind of feel that maybe you wouldn’t mind answering it whenever into the future.)

I watched SFTW on iPlayer; you were hilarious! Probably the most funny part was when you moaned so much about getting your hands dirty; I did also like the fact that a few times during the times you were on we heard the whole crew in the studio laughing too :)

You see Mark it’s all about positive vibes with technology – believe it will work and it will :)

If you came to the debut Watsonian picnic in Hyde Park on Saturday then a few more of us could get on the scoreboard (hint hint). x
