Keeping ourselves out of mischief

Today’s blog will be a bit on the geeky side.

As I mentioned when the Ten-Year Self-Improvement Challenge got underway, one of my aims in setting it up was to replicate, in a different, less sleep-deprived form, the communal atmosphere of the 24-hour shows. These celebrated and unpleasant events worked by setting up an enormous number of challenges, games, running jokes and stupid activities, and then sustaining them over a day-long period until everyone’s resistance had been worn down. The number of people signing up to the Challenge has been heartening, and by Thursday, we should have collected in reports on their success (or otherwise) in taking first steps this week. But in the meantime, I’d like to explore some other ways in which this 10-year blog can keep alive the traditions of the long show. Here are a few.

Firstly, GAMES. I began one on Saturday, by offering to give a free iPod to the person who made the best appeal for it, in mitigation of my slightly controversial remarks about the death of music radio. There have been quite a few moving appeals already. If you haven’t already, and you want to win an iPod, you have until this coming Saturday to post a suitably beseeching comment on that blog. I’ll reveal the winner the Monday after. And then, in suitably 24-hour-fashion, we are going to try to convey the iPod from me to the winner, by means of a human chain involving other readers of the blog. Fun!

Every week there will be a similar game or competition.

Secondly, ADMIN. Pointless admin, keeping tabs on the audience members coming and going, was always an enjoyable feature of the 24-hour shows. So: first of all, has anyone read the blog every day so far? These people are the equivalent of the ‘lifers’ who stuck out the whole of the marathon shows. I’d like to determine how many, if any, there are. Then we can keep track of them over the next ten years and see how many stay the course, and again, build up a community between them. When the TYSIC branch of the Fans’ Forum is set up, this will be even easier, but for now, feel free to register in the Comments section if you’ve been here for the whole time so far.

Then, CREATIVE PROJECTS. During the long shows there were often large-scale collaborative projects, like making a quilt with a patch for each country in the world, making a tapestry of history, writing a song to attract a celebrity to our clutches, sending someone to Paris and back, and so on. With so many people’s TYSICs being concerned with writing, music or arts of other kinds, it feels like we ought to have some enormous collective hobby to go back to now and again over the next 10 years: some huge piece of work that involves as many of us as possible. I’ve not thought of anything yet, but I thought I’d ‘put it out there’.

There are other aspects of the 24-hour show which are harder to translate to a virtual community, such as phoning radio stations to persuade them to send us breakfast. But I’m open to any ideas. A lot of today’s entry has been me thinking out loud, as they say, about ways to keep this blog interesting and collaborative. If there’s anything you would like the TYSIC community to tackle, do suggest it. Tomorrow I’ll try to assess the results of my first week as an official optimist. It’s going to be one hell of a blog.

i was so gutted when i didn’t quite make it as a lifer at the first 24 hours show i came to, and now i’ve missed out on this too :0( can i be a belated lifer if i read every single blog posted?

can’t think of anything creative at the moment except – this was a cate thing, and would be difficult for those people in say krgyzstan (wow – i really can’t spell that – thanks google), that book launch picnic was brilliant. maybe we could somehow replicate it?
or something to do with photos and giant online collage..?

I’ve been away this week and I’ve now caught up on the backlog of this here blog.

The big thing in my TYSIC this week is that I’ve regarded myself as a successful lighting designer, being paid to do something that many of my friends aspire to, rather than a failed actor.

I’ve also been trying to think of my failure to do all the things I meant to do for lent as merely a failure to set reasonable goals.

Until the beggining of last week I have read all of your blog entries but this week has been really busy but I’m catching up on them all now :)

I set a goal for myself last year, which was a little goal on the road to my major goal of producing a comedy series for the BBC, and that was to meet more people on the comedy scene. Whilst I know a fair few people on the Melbourne scene, I would like to get to know more of the greater Australian/International scene. So with this in mind, and with the fact you won’t be at this year’s Melbourne Comedy Festival, I aim to arm myself with a camera and a small whiteboard, and meet with as many comedians as I can, get them to write you a ‘wish you were here’ message on the board and take a photo of them with it (thus proving the goal had been achieved). It’s just a cheeky pretense for my lack of networking abilities, but let me know what you think! I’d hate to put your name forward without your permission.

I have read every blog entry so far, but haven’t set myself a TYSIC so I don’t know if it counts. I have thought a lot about a TYSIC, but haven’t mananged to fix on one, or some. I could start by faffing less.

I’ve read the blog every day so far! I know i’m a bit behind this week, but we’ve had the builders in making us a new bathroom, and for some reason that meant we had no internet for a few days? Odd

  7. Posted by Dean on March 11, 2010

I’ve been reading every day but rarely comment! I shall add a new challenge to my TYSIC – comment at least once a week on your blog!

In other news, I got rejected from 2 applications for jobs in the media industry, bringing the running total to around 6.

On a positive note, I’ve been asked to host a Race for Life in front of 3000 women!

Now, off to sign up to the forum I go…

I have read this every day and am loving it. TYSIC is going very well, and creative wise… I am thinking some mass picnic.

I too have read all of your blog posts so far, and intend to continue to do so. I don’t always read them on the day they’re published, but I always get to them eventually.

I haven’t been a lifer, but by golly, this article has made me decide that I want to be one! So, I’m going to read everyday now and even go back over all the previous articles. Hell, I’ve even created a bookmark for the blog on my browser. Proactivity!

  11. Posted by Chris on March 10, 2010

I’ve read every entry of your blog, though not necessarily on the day of publication!

  12. Posted by Someone on March 10, 2010

Yeee I’m one of them! Except for I’ve only just caught up on this one, (yesterday’s) what with being ucharacteristically away from the internet for a day – always the way. But I’d still say i’m one of them yeee.
And although coping with people TYSIC not going swimmingly, I think all ideas sounding pretty interessant. So yep, let’s go let’s go.

Hi all. I too am a “lifer” – although that makes us sound a little like we’re forced to be here, when I’m sure we’re all here by choice!

I didn’t have the time to reply here yesterday, as I was busy with my TYSIC. More on that on tomorrows blog.

I too like the idea of a collaborative project, but tbh I’m stumped for ideas!

  16. Posted by lex on March 10, 2010

I’ve been here every day. I am soo down with the collective project.
Wowee, my mind has blown clean out of my ears.

Ps. I am adding a new goal: more self-confidence by leaving my comfort zone more often.

Mark, i’ve decided to use you as the basis of my Goal Setting class i’m running next week for my Year 11 students. Just thought i’d share

I’m absolutely a life (so far), and I’m about 95% of the way towards completing my ‘end of week 1′ goals… which means I must be at least .95/520ths of the way to completing my TYSIC goal.

I think I’ve managed to challenge my way of thinking in the last week, and am busy considering what I’ll have to do next week. I think in some strange way everythign is to do with gifts. I have to stop doing things because I want things in return and start trying of offer everything I do as a gift (to myself or to someone else)

So gifts then: perhaps a question ought to be “what can we, as a community, give to each other”?

  21. Posted by Simon on March 10, 2010

I’m not sure how commenting on this blog is moderated, but I’ve tried to post the same thing multiple times (risking looking like an idiot) and none of them have shown up. Perhaps I’m not allowed to post URLs or something? I’ll rephrase my message slightly and hope for the best:

I’m a lifer. The proposed games and projects sound really awesome!

I’ve made loads of headway on part one of my TYSIC, which is to “Run the entire length of the Central line”. I’ve draw up a map of my proposed route (which I invite the community to scrutinise), I’ve began training and I might even have found a running mate in another TYSIC’er, Vikki. Click on my name to see my blog!

Oh and Mark: You, and most of the other comedians, were hilarious last night at the Porchester! I was the guy really near the front looking extremely happy to be alive but shaking his head sternly when Sean Lock took the piss out of “We Need Answers”.

    Hi Mark,
I’ve read all your blog’s, I’m fairly sure. I treat it as a letter you’ve written me, and I write back most days! I’m on here more than twitter now . I have a book mark so I come straight here not using your link, although that’s how I first arrived here. I read a lot of the comments too, time dependent.
I’m on a mobile not a pc, so replying takes ages!
My tysic’s are all things I’d had in mind anyway, but you’ve focused my attention and got me started. I went for a walk sunday morning, my first volunary, non-destination-related walk since I got my first car 30 years ago. And I’m starting a beginners line dancing class tonight, not done line dancing for many years, it’s good exercise and I love music, and should be fun.
I’m continually amazed by all your ideas so I’ll watch with interest.
There’s lots of comments today, excellent support.

    Hi all
I am a TYSIC lifer, been following blog daily since just before challenge launched.
Am up for challenges, parties, collaborations, etc. Think coffee table book is great idea, would be pleased to assist in pulling together, perhaps people could write 2 para summary of themselves, their challenge and include a photo this year; then we could do the book partway through/ at end to include updates from those who sent in initial summary? As a photographer in Yorkshire, I’d be happy to help with collation, putting together book design, etc. Perhaps if there’s other togs out there, we could combine efforts to do local twsic photo shoots?
Another idea floating the forum was the Annual Teddy Bears Picnic – which I think would be a lovely idea!
Finally, my challenge going well so far. Think will be helpful to have the ‘admin’ bit to encourage me to stick to it. (if I’m reporting in, I am more likely to remember to keep at it!).
Thanks, Mark, for setting this all going!
PS if need anyone in Selby/York/Hull for iPod relay, am a willing volunteer!

  24. Posted by Ally on March 10, 2010

I’ve been reading the blog everyday since I started reading it, part-way through last year. I’m not very good at posting comments though…

I suggest we make one of those ‘coffe table’ books, but with contributions from everyone such as bits of writing, art, photos… and anything else that can go into a book.

In terms of the TYSIC I have written a few scenes for a 10 minute play. Hopefully when done said play will be entered in some kind of competition.

  25. Posted by John on March 10, 2010

I’m a lifer, though I’m afraid I don’t read everyone’s comments, so apologies if this has already been mentioned. As Mark says, “With so many people’s TYSICs being concerned with writing, music or arts of other kinds” … it seems to me that we should write and perform a musical!

I’m a lifer but I think you already knew that one. I’ll take anything you can give me being pretty much stuck in Sydney (well the sticks out the side of Sydney) for at least the next half of the next 10 years. You know I want to be involved :)

  28. Posted by Linzy on March 10, 2010

I’m a bit late in saying I’m a lifer but that’s only because I’ve been busy coding towards my TYSIC – I estimate that it’s about 20% done.

So far, the bits that have been written work, now I just have to make what I’ve got look pretty and write the rest of it…

In keeping with long show tradition, I’m a lifer,

My favourite admin role was being post lady in the 2005 show…. is there any way I can replicate that?! I enjoyed it immensely.

I think I can use my influence as a teacher of impressionable young children to do something creative – they could make a patch for a quilt each year, or something. Suggestions welcome.

As for my progress: I have two aims. One is to say something really thoughtful and nice to someone at least once a day. I have done this, and the smiles I have had in return have been most rewarding.
With regards to visiting every continent, I have looked at a map and planned a trip to North America next June. I haven’t bought the tickets yet, but I’m already considering which continent will follow the year after that. I am excited! Like most people keep saying; I wouldn’t be seriously thinking of doing this if it weren’t for the challenge.

  32. Posted by Suz on March 9, 2010

I read them all too. The highlight of my blog feed.

TYSIC – Well, in a bid to feel calmer/be healthier, I’ve reduced my caffeine consumption. I’ve finally found a herbal tea that I like, which should help. I do like tea tea though and you can’t have a cake or buttered crumpet without tea tea (and a life with no cake or buttered crumpet is no life at all), but if I only have tea on those occasions, I’ll be doing okay.

Languages: I followed le Monde on Twitter a while ago and proceeded to ignore all the links. Now I’m making an effort to read a lot of the tweeted articles. I’ve also added a load of French blogs to my blog feed.

Writing: Zilch. I’ll have more time for that after this week.

Collaborative projects sound fun. No ideas at the moment, but I’ll give it a think over.

Thanks, Mark. This is all really lovely.

I can’t quite remember if I’ve read everything; probably averaging about 90% ish, I think (spot the maths nerd…)
TYSIC so far has consisted of working out exactly what I want to achieve; it’s becoming a very long list. And contemplating starting a blog about it as many on the forum seem to be doing. Not sure if this would help with the “not procrastinating” thing though.
I’m unlikely to be any help in the iPod chain, unless you need to get it to somewhere in Ireland.
And even then, I’m not completely prepared to drive to Cork from Belfast.

  35. Posted by Toni on March 9, 2010

I’m a lifer too – the daily installment helps distract me from other less important things like work and my thesis!! :-) Enjoying it and I must say the optimism challenge is going well. I’ve made a start on one of my goals – a three marathon thing – have walked almost 6 miles in the last two days. not much but its a start. Plus I printed an application form for a mini marathon on June 7th. I think thats progress!!

Anyway keep up the good work and don’t stop writing the blog (or your tweets) or I might actually have to work/study….

  36. Posted by Jade on March 9, 2010

TYSIC progress – 12 job ‘applications’ sent out, new article in the pipelines and on my way to the first 5000 words of my story (due by Thursday!)

Ok, so…I felt as though I was cheating a little as I have been working towards this goal for a while and would be doing so (albeit with a little less gusto) without TYSIC. Therefore, I want to do something for TYSIC, inspired by TYSIC. And what is more inspired than TYSIC than the people!?

So in keeping with the suggested group idea…I am currently arranging to join Simon (below) for one leg of his challenge…Running the central line. Therefore, my new TYSIC challenge is to continue this idea as much as I can, along with my camcorder!

If anyone has an idea as to some way that I could contribute or help with their TYSIC then let me know (blog linked to name), really….anything! I am willing to travel (within budget!) My aim at current is to meet/help 10 TYSIC’ers in it’s first year!

    How’s that!?!

TYSIC news: I got rejected from Edinburgh Uni so that’s a main goal and a little one put back a bit, but I’m thinking of maybe reapplying next year anyway even if I get into my second choice. At least I’m being decisive (maybe I should make that a goal too…).

I’m in the middle of writing a TYSIC blog though so click on my name in a couple of hours to see it if you want.

I am a lifer, though I’m ashamed to admit I don’t always read the comments…ordinarily I wouldn’t feel bad about that but now I feel I’ve been letting the community down.

At any rate, my ten year plan is not off like a shot but it its moving slowly forward (ten years after all; I remind myself that it’s a marathon not a sprint). I’ve started a new writing project and have opened a new file folder on my computer to put it in. That doesn’t seem like much, but it’s actually huge, if for no other reason than if i try to skip a day writing the folder stares at me in clear disapproval.

In the effort to get my work seen by theater companies not run by friends of mine, I’ve purchased this year’s copy of the Dramatists Source Book (it’s a collection of the names addresses, contact people and submission requirements of nearly every regional theater in the US) and am going though it to try and find theaters that are looking for the sort of work I’ve got available.

    Ok, further investigation shows that…

    1) Ballot for England v Aus at Lords was done months ago
    2) Tickets for any England v Aus match are over £100

Time to go local, I think. Maybe that’s the better way, in any case.

  48. Posted by Rick Procter on March 9, 2010

Well my good man, I was a ‘platinum lifer’ for the Edinburgh shows so I feel I owe it to myself at least to attempt the equivalent status here, and so far I’m on course. It took me a few days to catch up with the weekend instalments after taking the Twitter links for granted, but as of now I’m up together.
Progress on my TYSIC agenda is slow so far due to a currently hectic schedule (I will publish my goals on the soon-to-come TYSIC forum when it’s ready) but… I do have a job interview on Friday and I’m handing in 2 more applications tomorrow. Haven’t touched the cinema review video blog for ages and a backlog is building, but I’ll be up to date with that a-s-a-p. And I’ll be buying a shiny new digital camcorder soon too.

  49. Posted by anna lowman on March 9, 2010

Yup, lifer over here. If I’d joined in at the equivalent time to last summer’s 24 hour show (7am) that’d mean getting involved until about 2013, so I’m glad I’ve been a tad more hardcore this time round.

I’ve read one and a half books since TYSIC got underway – Mark Kermode’s It’s Only A Theory and Nick Hornby’s Juliet, Naked. Let’s say I’m easing myself in; I’ll go for something a bit more ‘improving’ next.

As for the live sport spectatorship, I’ve been looking into what I could go to, and I’m thinking I would LOVE my first cricket experience to be the England v Australia ODI at Lords in July. I could make it earlier but I want it to be Lords, and we have got ten years to play with.

  50. Posted by DavidN on March 9, 2010

Lifer here – forgot to post that I’m hoping to learn to play the piano in the next ten years.

  51. Posted by Emma on March 9, 2010

    another Lifer.

so far for my challenge (finding love) I have made a few drastic lifetstyle changes.

I’m a diet and fitness kick and have so far lost 1stone 9lbs. This has been improving my confidence and making me look a little bit nicer which have both been a good help. I am also trying to get out of my usual comfort zone and ‘putting myself out there’ with different groups of people, doing different things and in different places to increase my chances of finding someone nice. Its not worked yet though.

  52. Posted by Helen on March 9, 2010

I am a ‘lifer’… it has been most enjoyable so far and I find both the competition and creative idea rather exciting, I must say.

  53. Posted by perian on March 9, 2010

I’ve read the blog every day, but I just can’t call myself a lifer. In my vocab, it’s a pejorative term for those people who never left my hometown. Not because they couldn’t, but because the thought never crossed their minds. Reading your blog every morning before I start work is much, much better than that!

Anway, I’ve taken the first itty bitty steps towards two of my TYSIC goals. The first goal was to start a personal blog and post to it regularily. Two shiny posts on my brand new blog are a start, right?

The other goal was to travel to 10 other countries and my baby steps were to a) do a budget, b) open a savings account, and c) buy a travel guide to Australia. Because I may start out with logical financial goals, but it’s also in my nature to pick the place that will cost me an arm and a leg just to get to!

Collaborative projects sound like fun, though unless some handmade chainmail will come in handy, I doubt I’ll have much to contribute.

  56. Posted by Kate (@ClariSaxy) on March 9, 2010

Oh, and, yes, I have read the blog everyday (and i probably used too many commas in this sentence).

  57. Posted by Kate (@ClariSaxy) on March 9, 2010

I don’t know where to put this so I’m adding it here. Forgive me if I’m wrong.

A few minutes ago I added another part to my #TYSIC so consequently I haven’t to that yet. That is to play the violin (which I’m failing in teaching myself) once a week.

The other part is to eat better meals and find new recipes to faciliate that. I think I might have cooked properly twice this week judging by the washing up I have done/have to do so I suppose that’s a start. But it’s made me realise I need to keep firmer tabs on what I’m eating. So this weekend I will be getting a notebook, or I might pinch a book from the stock cupboard at school, and I shall write down what I eat everyday in a weight watcher’s kind of way, but to gain weight rather than loosing it.
    Planning….its the only way.

  58. Posted by Hannah on March 9, 2010

I’ve read every day, even the un-advertised weekend blogs (!)
This is probably because a)I have no life b)I’m excellent at procrastinating and c)It’s become a habit, which unlike most of my habits is not in any way unhealthy and therefore I can convince myself that it is actually good for me.

In support of my suggestion, I add that it seems like a lot of people (myself included) have the goal of being more comfortable around people/making friends/finding love. All goals made easier when you are in a room full of people.

    Go on…

    I’m a lifer. Hello!

I think the TYSIC community should get together once or twice a year and… do things. I haven’t thought this through very well. But it would be nice to meet people in person. It seems like we are pretty spread out around the UK and (?) the world, so maybe gatherings in major cities and then a collective skype interaction… thingie. It sounds like I’m suggesting another 24 hour show. I’m not (though that would be cool). Just a few hours on a Sunday afternoon or something like that. I am willing to bring cake.

  61. Posted by Lally on March 9, 2010

Been with you every day so far!

Not asking for an MP3 player: I still listen to CDs, cassettes and even vinyl, but mostly radio! It’s a great way to get suggestions and conversation with your music, from informed folks with access to new things and the best of the old.

I’m both a blog lifer and a full, complete, five time Edinburgh Fringe lifer, which means that I’ve seen more of Mark Watson than I have of some members of my own family. It also means that the using the word ‘life’ in relation to myself seems somewhat ironic.

  63. Posted by Jen on March 9, 2010

Yes, another Lifer. Not surprising for me, as I’m a geeky student — reading blogs and webcomics and etc. is what I do every day. But I’m actually commenting here, which I’m counting as part of my TYSIC goal of interacting more with people. This is a very friendly, non-intimidating place, which helps immensely.

While I doubt that the ipod will need to pass through Pennsylvania, I might be of use in the creative endeavors. I write a bit, I copy edit, and I can draw a really rubbish giraffe, or a dinosaur, or a duck.

  65. Posted by Jen on March 9, 2010

I’m a lifer, read it everyday so far. I’m really enjoying watching the project grow and love the idea of some giant mass creative project, bring all our imaginations and creative juices together. Over ten years who knows what we could all come up with!

  66. Posted by amycool on March 9, 2010

I believe I’ve read all of the blogs so far, although not necessarily on the day they came out as my laptop isn’t that reliable.

As for projects, I wonder if we could all take/draw/paint/photoshop a picture that sums up all or part of our TYSICs. They could have to be a certain size and then somebody artistic could make them into one big piece of art. And we could all write to an art gallery and get it displayed. If it was a fancy gallery with audio facilities, the musicians amongst us could write a piece of music to go with it.

I also quite like the picnic idea that was mentioned on twitter as I’m socially inept and would like to be cajoled into leaving the house and speaking to human beings without being separated by a screen. We could have one in each area of the UK, on different days so the wealthier amongst us could go to more than one.

    Cheerio! Amy. XXX

I’m a lifer, read it every day and it’s bookmarked right next to Richard Herring’s daily blog. I check them both to put off doing any work, really, but have become quite involved in the aspirational and motivational attitude on this blog.
A collaborative project sounds brilliant also! Although I’m the least creative person I know, I’m determined to try something new. Bring it on (whatever it is…)

I’m doing my first official TYSIC bit tomorrow. I will be plugging my friends running for president and activities officer of the student union in my lecture tomorrow morning. ACTUAL PUBLIC SPEAKING. Bloody Hell.

  70. Posted by Shell on March 9, 2010

Yep I’m a MW blog lifer (I think/hope – see below) as I’ve read them all since you announced it as a Ten Year Blog. I’ll be an honest though and say that I read more attentively on some days than on others and only occasionally, if lengthily, comment and I may not even count as a lifer as I missed it on the posting day a couple of times and had to look back the next day…this may well happen again over the next ten years so I’d like to know how strict the rules are…?

Not sure where/which blog to put this on so simply adding it to the latest:
    My TYSIC update:
I have tried to procrastinate less generally but I think this is definitely going to be a long term re-training project! Of the first two challenges I set myself: I HAVE tackled one…a bit – typically the nicest one: so I cut my nails short and have been taking myself back to basics with the piano over the last couple of days. I’m not sure what the best method is for me to re-learn and become good/confident at playing: Do I need to find a teacher or can I get some way towards my goal myself? The latter will certainly be better initially. So wisely or unwisely I’m trying to practice at least a little ‘every day’ (when I’m at home) *gulp* This may be way to disciplined for me and is something I’ve not tried to do since I was a child and it wasn’t my choice then! This time it is.

I really like the idea of a collaborative project but can’t think what we could /all/ contribute to in some way and which is sufficiently mad, grandiose and difficult to be fun and engaging over ten years. It /has/ to be difficult I think. (“Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult…” ’In the Loop’ 2009) Creatively I can write stuff: bad poetry, lyrics and song parodies etc, but along with the rest I reckon I’d turn my hand to anything to join in a collaboration: even a giant water skiing pyramid of lifers crossing the Indian Ocean whilst juggling cupcakes…

…but only because that seems a highly unlikely choice ;)

I’ve been reading everyday, it just makes me more excited to see you live in december!
you should get everyone to write a paragraph of a story or something then put it into a book so i can say i’ve been published in a book, which is technically part of my ten year challenge!

  74. Posted by cymruangel on March 9, 2010

I’m a lifer, though it took me a while to pluck up the courage to comment!

So far on the challenge I have:
    - Started using the hashtag #tysic on relevant tweets
    - Signed up to a Spanish “word a day” email and accompanying free videos
    - Worked out that by my grandfather’s standards I already know all that I need. His theory of languages is that you need to know the words for the numbers, beer, please and (although not essential) thank you, and then the rest can be done by sign language! I know 1 -10, 12, 33 and 70 – covers all eventualities I think – 70 beers please!

Other words I already know from salsa class – particulary the form known as rueda (meaning wheel – a circle form of the dance): arrive, ball, bull, butterfly, distraction, down, flavourful, labyrinth, magic, middle, mirror, “to the centre”, “to the inside”, “to the outside”, “tell her no”, gimme.
But somehow I suspect if I used them in conversation, I would get some very funny looks as salsa spanish is largely its own language!

aye,me too. Every single bloody day.

  76. Posted by Emily on March 9, 2010

I’m a lifer and proud and don’t plan on leaving any time soon.
As for the challenges, good progress on the main one at least – I have a wonderfully childish chart on which I get gold stars for remembering to/being bothered to eat properly, and I’ve eaten bits of apple on Sunday and yesterday and didn’t absolutely hate it. Out of context this is a bit “so what?” but it is far more progress than I could ever have imagined and it’s all thanks to the TYSIC (and of course to Mark for creating it).
As for piano playing, I can’t start that whilst at uni as the only piano I can access is at home, and the procrastination is still highly prevalent (unfortunately reading the blog/forum/commenting etc is itself procrastination) but one day (hopefully soon) I will learn to do work first and read the blog second. I have actually started researching my essay though which is progress in a small way.

  80. Posted by Spencer (Lomo 2) on March 9, 2010

Love the idea of a creative project Mark. There must so much talent living and breathing in the avenues of your followers/fandom.

I’m a massive believer in the power of collaboration; creating something that one person couldn’t conceive of on their lonesome. That’s the basis behind a little (but growing) collective that I’m part of called The Lomos. We have a central focus for the group as a musical comedy act called Peter Marshall and The Lomos but various people have contributed to the writing of the music, the comedy, the artwork – all earning a Lomo number in the process (badge of honour). Collaborate to accumulate is one of our mottos and the hope is that we can all help each other realise our personal goals/dreams.

Therefore I can only wonder what amazing things can be achieved by all the people reading your blog by working together or spurring each other on. I massively admire your 10 year project.

    Good work all involved!

  81. Posted by Amy Blencowe on March 9, 2010

I’m a lifer! You’re in my blog reader so I don’t miss anything.

So far on the TYSIC- the goal of getting into uni is stillup in the air! My first choice are the only one yet to reply and I won’t know until Thursday whether I got the results I needed in January modules. The other part of my tysic was to be more confident in myself. Obviously this is more long term but things are looking relatively promising. I’m taking the time to make a bit more effort with how I llok, which I think is a step in the right direction :)

On the creative side- I had a bit of an idea. Probably not quite what you had in mind but I think it would be quite fun anyway. There’s a website called onemilliongiraffes.com, the idea of which (as you may have guessed) is to accumulate one million pictures of giraffes. They could be models, drawings, whatever. Since there are quite a few of us, we could all submit a few and help along the way! Maybe to make it more relevant to the tysics the giraffes could somehow reflect our challenges, and we could share them with eachother as well as submitting. Like I said, probably not what you had in mind but I quite like giraffes so i thought i’d suggest it anyway :)

Hope everyone else’s challenges are going well. Amy x

I read it every day but I do it in Google Reader…

Progress: I have written some thesis so am still on my way to a PhD. I met some new people last week so I am making new friends, and I have looked at Brian Cox’s Wikipedia so I am on my way to emulating his career (with less rock, though).

  83. Posted by Magnificent Josh on March 9, 2010

I think we should write a novel together, we have enough people who want to be writers.

I have read every blog post however 1 day I forgot and so read 2 days in one, like some sort of mental time travel it was.

The challenge is not going so well. Although I have started giving a damn about school work I have stopped giving a damn about my life, letting it slip a bit and am starting to feel rather down in the dumps. Today was alright though.

  84. Posted by Helen on March 9, 2010

This made me smile. Lots. And made me feel more special as every sentence past.

I’ve also read every blog so far so am as you call a ‘”lifer” and posted my successes on previous blogs of yours.

I’ve said this before, but I’m really looking forward to the next 10 years of my life. Cheers Mark. (That’s not supposed to sound as depressing as it might.

This might sound random, but in regards to the creative projects, how about a TYSIC cook book? We all get split up in to three sections (starter, main and desert) and come up with a range of delightful dishes we’ve made ourselves?

    x

  87. Posted by Laurs on March 9, 2010

Hi Mark, I’ve been here the whole time, I find your insights into life really intriguing and I look forward to reading the blog each day (even the unpromoted ones of a weekend!)

I’m also loving the TYSIC too. It’s actually given me motivation to so something about a lot of my issues I’ve had about myself in the past – something that up until now, I have ignored. So, thank you for that.

Here’s to the next ten years!

  88. Posted by Jane W. on March 9, 2010

    I’ve been reading every day!
I haven’t set my challenge yet. I was thinking about it so much I couldn’t get an idea together! Maybe that sould be one of my challenges, not to over think everything! Is it too late to start my challenge?

  89. Posted by David Calder on March 9, 2010

Just completed step one for my TYSIC – I’ve sent a letter to my financial advisor. I hope she doesn’t come back to me saying my idea is potty and that she will have no further part in the matter.

I am proud to be able to say I am a lifer but not a hard-core lifer because I haven’t commented on every blog.

It would be good to meet up with other TYSICists at an annual event maybe.

For a group challenge we could maybe raise money to buy a derelict piece of land and do voluntary work to turn it into a nature reserve/ education centre for kids. That’s quite a big challenge but I guess with ten years spare it’s achievable!

Anyway, keep up the good work everyone!

  90. Posted by Tom Beasley on March 9, 2010

I’m one of the very committed and, if I may say, awesome people who have been reading since the very beginning. I also think a creative collaboration of some kind would be perfect and I would love to take part in it in some kind of writing capacity.

  91. Posted by Olga on March 9, 2010

I have read every single post, everyday :D so I am one of those people. My TYSIC is going fine, I still haven’t decided on all my challenges yet, but I do work harder at school, I practice my instruments every day, I’m continuing my blog, part of my TYSIC (link in the name ;) ) since I’ve always wanted to start a blog and always stopped after 3 or 4 days. I haven’t taken many steps towards my career goals, as I am only 17 and still at school.. unless you count doing my maths homework as progress.. I guess it is in a way haha

And I was thinking about some sort of massive jigsaw, with everyone having to make one piece out of paper or cardboard and paint it or draw it or something.. I think it would be a good idea :D

  92. Posted by Daniel on March 9, 2010

My challenge to stop wasting my days and be more cultured is going actually quite well, i have been exploring the delights of independent cinema

Hooray – I’m a lifer!!! I would love to have a cake too, Mark … but, on second thoughts I’d better not, I eat too much already!

Re the above, my TYSIC was going to be to lose a lb a week … hmmm … spot the flaw in my plan!

Basic aim is to be around to the end so I can be double your age!!! Come on now, I’m sure you were just as good at Maths as you were at English!

All the talk of writing coincided with me stumbling across a “first chapter” I was asked to write overnight a few years back. Since this discovery I’ve written, re-written, saved; tweaked and re-tweaked and altered and changed and re-read, saved; re-re-read and re-re-tweaked it a little again and again and saved … and now I’m intrigued to find out what happened next so perhaps that could be my TYSIC???

Btw, how do you pronounce TYSIC please??? As in Thai-sick – Far Eastern malady??? Or to rhyme with Physic – single lesson in the lab (one too many if your teacher was as boring as mine!!!)

I hope you won’t be too cross if I join TYSIC a little late as I think I’m just about ready now …

  94. Posted by Heather Jones on March 9, 2010

I’ve read your blog everyday since it started – and I think I’ve pretty much read all the comments too (except possibly later additions)

ADMIN – I don’t think I can cope with supporting all 200+ of the other TYSIC-participants. Could we perhaps form (or be randomly put into) support sub-groups? A bit like school house system, or tutor groups? Could mix n match or have similar challenges grouped together. Geographical ‘hubs’ might also be possible (a London posse, a Manchester posse, etc?) I like the idea of a bit of friendly rivalry and competition – maybe with ‘house-points’ awarded for certain things/progress in the challenges? Or just for honesty, attendance, supportiveness to others, creativity or similar (cos challenge slip-ups or failures shouldn’t be punished really)

Happy to help with ipod chain if Ealing, West London is any use (haven’t beseeched for the ipod myself as am happy with the one I have already)

Can’t think of a creative suggestion for massive shared hobby project but will ponder further…

Will post separately about TYSIC progress (Where is best? just comments bit on Thurs blog??)

I’m a blog-lifer. As for TYSIC, my hair is currently a weird shade of pink as I tried to face my fear of dyeing it red. I also failed at dyeing it red. I’m not sure what lesson I’ve learned, but it might be to always get your hair done professionally. When I have some spare time I’ll do something to fix it. I also still need to do something TYSIC-wise about my career and future… but that’s scarier.

TYSIC update: one of my little ones was to have the confidence to talk to people in the entertainment bussiness, who I like and admire (you’re on the list of people as well Mark). So I started my TYSIC by meeting Derren Brown, it was only a little step and very small compared to a lot of people’s challenges on here made me feel all good and happy.

I also decided to get back in contact with a friend who I hadn’t seen or spoken to for about 2 months so that was nice.

In continuing TYSIC news I went round to the house of someone I don’t know that well this morning for tea and shit telly to cheer us all up.

In other ideas I wonder how well a group podcast would work to round up on news. There are sites where you can have as many people as you like which might be fun.

My TYSIC has got off to a disastrous start. One of my goals was to get good at a sport basically so I could so off to my mates, this weekend I dug my mountain bike out of the garage and hit the local forest. All was going well until I hit an oversized tree root at speed and completed a flying dismount. One visit to the hospital later and I’m looking at a broken collar bone and surgery to fix it. Hmmm maybe now’s the time to concentrate on my less physical goals.

  107. Posted by Jamie0S on March 9, 2010

I’ve been reading it all, but not necessarily in the right order. A habit formed from my new tactic of reading news items in reverse, paragraph by paragraph. They make more sense.

Anyway, I’m hoping to stick around and am willing to help with anything along the way.

Oo, haven’t said what I’m working towards in ten years. Was tempted to plan to have a 10 year plan in ten years, but that seems deliberately obtuse, so we’ll stick with the whole creating an urban farm thing I have going on right now. There will be one, it will be bloody good, it won’t be desperate for money, it will employ people, feed people, educate people… etc etc.

It raises another possibility of course – in ten years, if we need a venue for a gathering, there’ll be a few acres available.

  108. Posted by Phill on March 9, 2010

I’m also a ‘lifer’. Well, I’ve read it every day so far anyway. Although I am subscribed to you via Google Reader, which makes it more difficult for me to miss one.

I’m happy to participate in the ‘iPod chain’ if necessary!

I think the creative project sounds good. I guess a number of TYSIC projects involve musical instruments, so perhaps we could form a massive band and do a cover of something? (I’d suggest writing a song but donig that collaboratively with so many people would be a nightmare. Deciding on a song to cover would be hard enough, but still.)

  109. Posted by Chris H on March 9, 2010

I’m a lifer too, and am really enjoying reading the blog. I have to keep myself entertained somehow, as I don’t have an iPod. Beseeching enough…?

  110. Posted by Adele on March 9, 2010

Another ‘lifer’ here. Read it every day when I can and catch up on what I missed when I can’t.

Would love to get involved in a creative project but I’m more of a go with the flow sort of person. Not very creative at all. I can wrap presents quite prettily though – not sure how to crow-bar that one in mind you.

I’d happily help the i-pod along in it’s journey if it comes through Nottingham.

Challenges are going well, mini goal nearly achieved!

  111. Posted by @BexQuillerdrive on March 9, 2010

well so far so good I’m a lifer.

However i’m struggling to tie down my TYSIC’s at the moment just because I’m indecisive and don’t want to pick goals that are unattainable and then feel like a massive failure (looking like a failure is fine but feeling like one :\ )

although i’m going to make a decision by the end of the day and make a blog to stop myself from changing my mind.

  115. Posted by Corey on March 9, 2010

Yep, lifer here too. We could easily do a collaborative music/writing project, but not all are into that so seems a shame to alienate. There must be something????……some side project ideas for us all:

    1. A prize (donated by Mark) if anyone manages to put a mention of TYSIC in the media. (Mark would also be eligible for this, and would have to give the prize to himself)
    2. Have an annual tournament of a game (online or board) with the winner receiving a trophy each year.
    3. (For Beth) We could all submit a drawing for a new book of pictures. I know a childrens book publisher, sure she’d be thrilled to bits with it!!
    4. To sort out the lifers from the sometime readers, there could be a sort of register system to clock in with. Those with perfect attendence records could again win a prize (donated by Mark).
5.Annual calender of us doing Self Improvement challenges!

Lunch times dragging to a close now.

    Bye

I’m a lifer, so far! I adore the idea of a community creative project – a band would be fab, so would some kind of lovely web 2.0 styley collaborative work of art or fiction or both.

Another lifer here…i also have a blog to record my own advances towards fulfilling the TYSIC. Feel free to check it out and can’t wait for ‘our hobbies’ i love a good craft project, maybe something based around putting all our challenges on material, photo, song, painting or the like…just an idea!

Yup, have also read the blog every day and would be happy to help convey the iPod on its way (no drama in agreement, is there?).
The only – badly thought-out – idea I have for a creative collaboration is whether we could do something to mark/encapsulate each year of the ten. Perhaps a series of time capsules, which could include peoples’ writing, music, art etc or just things that embody that year (for 2010 so far, maybe a #Save6Music twibbon and a pointless discussion about “twenty ten” versus “two thousand and ten”?). Just a thought and most likely a dull one.
Same question as Al re TYSIC updates – what’s the best place to post them?

I am a lifer and I am only slightly embarrassed to admit it. I can’t really think of any creative idea’s though sorry.

For those of you who set up blogs:

A lot of us published our urls via the fan forum and are now all following one anothers progress. Reading little comments of support on your blog from complete strangers is encouraging and very sweet.

I’m a lifer – I read it every morning on my iPhone lying in bed – a little procrastination routine before I drag myself out of bed (especially on work mornings).

On the collaborative project front how about some kind of collaborative photo challenge? It would be easy to take and share photos on a Flickr group (or similar). You don’t have to be a professional to do it so everyone could get involved.

I think I’ve read every one so far. My own plans have mostly been a fail so far, as the piano I need to learn to play is in a different town. I can offer help for any aspiring comedy performers though, I run a tiny gig in a pub in Leamington for new acts, it’s on a break at the moment but hopefully returning at the start of May for a few months. If any of you folks want a spot then get in touch with me (you can link through to my blog and use the form there). If there’s more than a couple we might be able to get some sort of TYSIC special going the one night.

Yes. I’m still here too. I’ve recently been made redundant and I’m currently jobless and my aim was to get a job, then in 10 years been in a position (at the age of 54) to be able to give up work: Still looking earnestly and applying for roughly one job a day.

I’ve also made a blog on WordPress; there’s nothing on it yet but I plan to write something this week.

  128. Posted by Rob on March 9, 2010

    Read it everyday, too.

  129. Posted by Simone on March 9, 2010

I don’t often comment, but I read your blog everyday.

I love the idea of a 10-year collaborative project!

  130. Posted by Nicola on March 9, 2010

I’ve read it every day. Mainly because I’ve been avoiding doing my actual challenge of getting on with my dissertation… I doubt that bodes well.

  131. Posted by Al Kennedy on March 9, 2010

I’ve read ‘em all, very entertaining (sometimes controversial) stuff!

In terms of collecting in reports, do you want us just to leave comments on the blog? If so, which post should we comment on?

I feel i am what is said to be a “lifer” everyday day bored in work i check this really does brighten up my day usually filled with spreadsheet and accounting stuff.

FIrst week of the challenge TYC challenge going ok, im attempting to write a short radio comedy script as a result a few rambling of mine will this month be broadcast to the world (a very small part of it ) through an open mike, fills me with crippling fright!

But to be an optimist i could be dead or

I’ve read all the blogs to date and am willing to get involved in any and all projects that arise.

  134. Posted by Anna on March 9, 2010

Another one here who has read the blog every day. I’ve got into the habit of reading it whilst breastfeeding, and as the boy is showing no signs of wanting to be fully weaned yet, it’s a habit which I’ll be continuing for a while.
If the ipod needs to travel through Essex on its way to the winner I’ll be happy to help out.
No ideas for anything creative we could all do, but I’ll have a think about it…

  135. Posted by rachel on March 9, 2010

i’m proud to be a 24hr show lifer and a blog lifer (so far anyway).
although, i am not at all creative. rubbish me.

I commented yesterday on how well my TYSIC is going, summary: very very poorly.

But I have read every blog so far, making sure I read back to the last edition if I miss one.

And I made a poster, with the aim of carrying it around with me for the next 10 years. It has all my TYSICs on it and an out line of the whole idea (with credit where its due Mark). Once the TYSIC part of the fan forum is up and running I’ll pop a picture of it up. Also made a purse sized one. Can’t remember whether I mentioned it yesterday but hey ho.

The online organisation of TYSIC means it is slightly more anonymous than the 24 hour shows. So perhaps it should be something that can be done virtually with the most basic of computer skills. Or if we want to meet in person, local TYSIC’s should be brought together first.

I’m proud to say I’ve been reading everyday since its birth. I decided I should not try and make any effort to persuade you to give me an Ipod as already possessing an Iphone it may make me seem greedy, which would be working against my wishes for the TYSIC. However if the Ipod needs to be moved through Manchester to its worthy winner I will be more than happy to help

I’m one of the Lifers as you so put it. And I don’t care if it’s geeky. I love it.

As for ‘creative projects’, I’d like to put myself forward to help to create something very special for the TYSIC. How about a fortnightly/monthly podcast? We can collect the best stories and put them together in an easily accessible format. And any of the TYSIC musicians can put some music forward to be used, budding comedians can record routines etc.

And possibly, just possibly, we could have a TYSIC day during the Edinburgh festival. Mark, I know you’re aiming to have your shows quite late at night – surely any TYSIC-ers around could meet up during the day and do something?

That’s another podcastable event – I’m planning on going to the festival this year (my first time – yay!) and will be broadcasting from what will no doubt be a dank and dingy room.

If anyone’s interested in helping with my idea, get in touch on the forum or on my Twitter. That includes you Mark.

On the account not working for your fansite I just tried to send another email and it worked so my email must have been messing with me that day!
    Full steam ahead!

  140. Posted by Sam on March 9, 2010

I’ve read it everyday. Luckily it’s not too long otherwise this might seem slightly sad or obsessive.
The human chain idea in itself is rather optimistic of you. Yay for triumphs.
Also (and this is purely in the interests of helping community spirirt) I wouldn’t mind being sent to Paris and back, or even just breakfast.
My TYSIC hasn’t gone so well so far, although the comedy society I started at university has finally got underway and moving, so I guess thats some success. I also managed to lead the meeting, woo for me.

  141. Posted by EmmaT on March 9, 2010

I have just enough time to say all great ideas and yes I am a daily reader of the blog, not missed one yet. However I fear my TYSIC may mean that I will miss quite a few in the not to distant future, not sure of internet connections in the Himalayas. I could be the person you send out to Nepal and back, (via Snowdon and the Alps where I plan to do some training for my challenge)

  142. Posted by Ben on March 9, 2010

i LOVE the idea of a collaborative TYSIC creation of some sort. lots of people are learning instruments, i’ve already started telling them to form a band together.

i’m a lifer. I’ve read every blog so far. as for community, i and many others have started blogs, we’re mostly following each other to keep tabs and give encouragement/biscuits.

  143. Posted by Joelle Stanton on March 9, 2010

I’ve read it everyday so far and I plan to keep it up! I can’t get the website to work for me though as it won’t send me an email which is rather annoying. A dog may be thrown.

TYSIC report. I made a step to being more social and getting funding for the travelling I’m going to include in going to 100 shows in 10 years. I applied for a job. Granted I heard nothing back and probably won’t it’s a step. I hate talking to strangers let alone people with any form of power. I hope all the other challengers are doing well :)

  144. Posted by Beth (@Doomed1) on March 9, 2010

First – My challange is off to a slow start! Hoping for some positive news by thu!!

Secondly – Yes ive red it so far everyday!!

Thirdly – Creatively, I can draw a dinosaur! thats about it! Let me know if this can help?!
