I’m about to leave Adelaide after what was a very enjoyable week. Although part of the enjoyment hinged on the perfect weather and general sense of relaxation that hangs around the place, I would also say the reaction to the shows has been the best I’ve had for a new show for some time, probably since I was a newcomer. So either I’ve got it pretty much right, or the public has been systematically lowering its expectations of Watson ever since around 2006, and now finally they’re at the level where they intersect with my abilities. I’m going to choose to believe the first explanation. There are more brutal, more reviewer-plagued and rainy festivals ahead this year, so there’s plenty of time for this cautious veil of optimism to disintegrate, but for now I’ll look on the bright side and say, thanks Adelaide, you were very nice this time around. It’s Brisbane next, and then Melbourne where it all gets a bit more serious. If you’re in the UK, meanwhile, just sit tight with your tickets for Edinburgh/the tour, and allow your excitement levels to inch up a little.
