Gypsies etc.

Good show tonight. Good show last night, also. I’ve had a good time in Devon. I think the show’s in quite good condition at the moment. I did quite a lot of new material tonight. None of this is very exciting blogging, but it’s all very pleasing for me.

I’m in the hotel in Exeter and I’ve just overheard a couple of people having a discussion about football and they’d reached a point where they needed to settle a dispute. So I did it for them. They seemed appreciative rather than wondering why the hell I’d butted in. The hotel’s pretty nice. I have a bath in my bedroom. That’s right. Not in the bathroom. You come in to the room and THERE’S A BATH RIGHT THERE. Incredible.

Been watching that programme about the gypsies? It’s really amazing. Does anyone know some gypsies so I can check how much of it is accurate?

That’s all for now; I thought I was going to struggle to get online, but it’s all worked out fine. I’ll write something more interesting tomorrow. Does anyone have a requested topic? If not, I think I’ve still got a backlog.

    1) I’m really pleased that Torquay went so well, we all know that it was the one that was genuinely worrying you.

    2) I can’t help but think that a bath in the bedroom is slightly unhelpful. I mean, what if you walk to the bathroom and fall into the bath on your way? That would be a) painful and b) really confusing if you’re still half asleep.

    3) The programme about gypsies is fascinating, but the massive backlash over a lot of the stuff featured has been really interesting. A lot of people have complained that them showing the young girls in skimpy clothes is unsavoury, but that’s their culture. Is it much different to anything else we see on television today?

    4) I don’t think there’s anything I’d like to request a blog on. Maybe…dreams/nightmares? After the one you told me about last night, where Emma spilt wine on you, I’d like to know if there are any other dreams that you’ve had that have created a bit of worry – often unnecessarily.*

*Dullest blog topic I’ve ever suggested. Going now. Bye bye.

Show in good condition and new material sounds excellent – well done. Glad Devon’s treating you well and enjoy that bath. It’s right there….

Haha watched one episode the other day. One of those shows I don’t want to enjoy, but do. The one I saw was quite revealing about a culture I’d otherwise know nothing about and, in all honesty, perhaps judged a bit too much.

Oh, and for anyone who remembers way back when I posted a comment about nearly being killed by a bus and asked whether or not I should do something about it – I’ve done something about it. Visit ten20thirty.wordpress.com/ and follow @ten20thirty on Twitter.

    Night night x

Ooh, I like Zoe’s suggestion! What’s the weirdest dream you’ve ever had?! That’d be fun. It’s fun in my head, at least.

I’m very glad to hear the show is going so well.

May you write a blog about space? I seem to recall you once said you’d like to go one day or you’d like to be an astronaut or something. I’d very much like to do the same. So if I’m right thinking you quite like space, maybe you could just talk about things you like about it. Do you like all the deep space black hole stuff or do you simply like looking at the moon and stars? Just any thoughts on space really. If you’d like. Never mind if not.

I’m glad the show went well. Abd a bath in the bedroom sounds fun if impractical.

If nothing else, what do you think to the custody laws stating that the mother has automatic custody? This is mainly because me and Dani are discussing it right now and we realised i’d have custody (of the small human) were something to happen to my Dad. Y’know. As you do.

  7. Misha says:

i should point out that i’m not in any way casting aspersions, I think you make a lovely Dad to Kit; and for that matter you did a good job of being very fatherly towards me at the fringe. And in general. We were just discussing custody.

I’m glad Devon is treating you well. The most exciting that happened to me there was seeing some kids chucking rocks at the windows of Exeter Cathedral.

I should give it another chance, though. It looked very pretty from the train both times I went to Cornwall.

I have a requested topic, or really a request to hijack the blog for my own purposes:

I’ve all but made up my mind that I should move to the UK after my stay at the Edinburgh festival this year. So basically, starting Aug 29th I am looking for somewhere to live and a job. If any watsonians work in the health/life sciences, or know someone who does, I’d love to have a chance to pick their brains about what they do, where they work, and what their jobs are like.

Also, if anyone is looking for a flatshare in September, that would be great. And a question for all the UK-based watsonians, what is great about your city? I more or less have my pick of the litter in terms of where to live, my decision will likely be job-related, but I’d love to hear what you guys have to say about where you are.

Oh, and one more thing. Anyone who’s moved between countries have any advice for me? I have lived in the same house my whole life (apart from moving a 2 hour drive away to uni), so any tips on adjusting to a new country would also be great.

I know this sounds like a lot to ask, but Watsonians are a delightful bunch of smart people, and I need all the help I can get to prevent me from imploding with stress about these decisions.

It was a fantastic show last night! I actually had to wipe tears away at one point. I’m glad you felt it went well too, you should be very pleased!
I’m now trying to figure out what hotel in Exeter has a bath in the room…. If I see you on my way to work I’ll say hello.
Hope your journey back goes well, and we’ll be at your next show in the not too distant future!
Thanks for a fab night out.

Ahhh Exeter, my university town, spent a great three years there ending 6 years ago, although I have not been back since. A highlight was Man United coming down to play the 3rd round replay at St James Park (the more important Southern one of course!) when Ex were in the conference. Considering it is much more of a rugby place and myself a rugby fan it was a surreal day, the atmosphere in the city was amazing!

We have Irish travellers living on the outskirts of our town, although they are not so much travellers now as they have been there for a few years. They integrate with the community quite a bit, more so than those on Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, they send their kids to the local schools etc. Only thing is that they let their horses escape/roam onto the main (busy & national speed limit) road, we have had to rescue them on more than one occasion.

  12. Rachael says:

It was horrific wasn’t it? Little kids watching men bare-knuckle fighting and they dont half love glitter too. I can’t get my head round it all.

  13. A lot of Rachels says:

People keep saying the gypsie programme is amazing… is everyone being sarcastic or is it actually interesting? I’m confused.

  14. Lydia says:

Thank you so much for yesterday, it was amazing. I’m glad you enjoyed yourself too.

Sorry if it seemed like I left kind of abruptly, my friend and I were painfully aware that the longer I stayed the more likely I was to say something really stupid. (she felt the need to congratulate me for passing for normal, to give some perspective on this) Thanks for signing my book and being nice and everything.

So yeah, you’re amazing, basically. x

LOVING the gypsy programmes! Their wedding dresses are so over the top it’s mental! How the little girls dance is really quite disturbing.
